Cornell University's Commuter and Parking Services is committed to engendering an environment of safety and mutual respect for pedestrians, bicyclists, in-line skaters, and motorists.

On an average day there are about 20,000 pedestrians, 10,000 cars, 5,000 cyclists, and hundreds of buses sharing the campus road- and path-ways. This makes the safety a formidable challenge. But there are things that Commuter and Parking Services can do and things that you can do to make it happen.

We are constantly striving to improve roads, paths, and intersections. We also create (with campus input) systems, regulations, and guidelines of behavior and interactions.

Take an on-line quiz that will help you get around the Cornell campus safely by teaching you the rules, rights, and responsibilities of pedestrians, in-line skaters, cyclists, and motorists. (Requires Internet Explorer version 4 or higher.)

You can also check out the on-line Campus Safety Slide Show or the Crossing Campus brochure (available on paper, or here as a PDF file*)

Observe laws, ordinances, rules, and most of all use common sense.

More Information

Campus regulations can be found in "The Rules and Regulations for the Control of Traffic and Parking on the Grounds of Cornell University."

Our cycling pages detail biking and skating safely and legally at Cornell.

State laws governing cyclists and in-line skaters are explained in detail in "Sharing the Road Safely," a publication of the Governor's Traffic Safety Committee (518) 474-5777.

Sometimes the best way to drive, cycle, or walk home is not to. Maybe it's the hour or the weather. Perhaps you don't think you should be driving. Possibly it's too cold or it's a new moon. Or, it could be that you just have the willies. Everyone's reasons may be different, but the Blue Light buses, escorts, and telephones are your safe way around campus at night.
