Parking and Permits
At all times, a motorcycle, motor scooter or moped must display a valid M permit to be parked on University grounds. The M sticker must be displayed on the right front fork, facing forward.

M permits are valid only in posted M areas. A motorcycle may also park in a metered area if time has been purchased for the space it occupies.

In certain locations, mopeds (with valid M permits) may be parked in bicycle racks which are located outside but not immediately adjacent to a building. Because of the potential life safety hazard, mopeds or other vehicles that are gas propelled may not be stored in or immediately adjacent to campus buildings.

M permits are available at Commuter and Parking Services, 116 Maple Avenue. There is a one-time charge for the M permit; call 255-4600 or e-mail Commuter and Parking Services for the current fee.

M permits have no expiration date. Permits may not be transferred; a permit may be reissued, at no charge, if it or its remnants are returned within one year from the date of purchase.

New York State Requirements

The New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law has been adopted by Cornell University and is enforced on the grounds of the University. Use of motorcycles, motor scooters and mopeds on the campus is also regulated by the Cornell University Parking and Traffic regulations. It is the responsibility of all persons who drive on the streets and roadways of the University to be aware of these regulations and to recognize and abide by uniform traffic-control devices and signs. A motorist who violates moving traffic regulations on the campus may be issued a New York State uniform traffic summons by a Cornell Police Officer. A Cornell University parking permit will not be issued unless the vehicle and operator meet all New York State requirements for legal operation. The vehicle to be registered must be owned or operated by the registrant or by a member of his or her immediate family (spouse, parent, child or sibling). Motorcycles, motor scooters and mopeds may not be operated or parked on sidewalks, lawns, plazas or other pedestrian areas. Motorcycles, motor scooters and mopeds are motor vehicles and are subject to all vehicle and traffic laws, and New York State regulations for motor vehicle operation. Mopeds and motor scooters may not exceed a driving speed of 20 mph.

All mopeds are limited-use motorcycles and must be registered and licensed with New York State. Class A mopeds must also be inspected. The driver must have a motorcycle license, carry insurance and wear helmet and goggles. Owners of Class B mopeds must carry insurance and wear helmet and goggles. Class C mopeds must be registered with Cornell University as well as New York State. Insurance, helmet and goggles are not required for Class C mopeds.
